What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that is often characterised by elevated levels of blood sugar caused by the body’s inability to produce insulin. It can result in a range of issues from nerve and kidney damage to blindness and heart disease.
What are the types of diabetes? There are three main types of diabetes:
  1. Type 1 Diabetes – Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, resulting in little or no insulin production.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes – Type 2 diabetes is often linked to a poor diet or lack of exercise, and is where the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough to regulate blood sugar levels.
  3. Gestational Diabetes – Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy as a result of hormonal changes that impact insulin’s effectiveness. Gestational diabetes usually resolves after childbirth.
What are the main symptoms of Diabetes? There are many symptoms of diabetes, such as increased appetite or feelings of thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, vision issues (such as blurred vision) and slow-healing wounds. These symptoms vary significantly from case to case - some individuals may experience mild or no symptoms, especially in the early stages of Type 2 diabetes, while others may have more pronounced signs.
