About this Disclosure and Barring Service Checks Training Course

This online Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Checks training course for teachers and school staff teaches learners what the disclosure and barring service is, how to request a basic check and dispute or appeal a decision, how to identify the difference between prohibition and interim prohibition orders, other ways to apply for a DBS check, and how to find further information and advice.

A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a statutory requirement of the recruitment process of staff in an education setting. Schools are more than simply a place for students to learn science or acquire a new language; they are also a place where children should be safeguarded from harm. A major and important part of ensuring a school is a safe place is making sure DBS vetted teachers and volunteers are hired. Schools may even need to provide evidence of a DBS check when inspections occur.

FAQ - Disclosure and Barring Service Checks

Frequently asked questions

It is a legal requirement that anyone who works with children and young people in an education setting passes a DBS check. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions that are put to our training specialists.

What is a DBS check? A DBS check is how employers check the criminal record when they’re looking to hire an employee. It’s a way to ensure they are a suitable person to work for them and if they’re suitable to work around children or adults.
What are the 3 types of DBS Checks?

The 3 types DBS Checks are:

  • Basic
This is the most basic check, and it is available to all individuals and employers in the United Kingdom. A basic DBS will search the Police National Computer (PNC) for a person's criminal history, convictions, and cautions.
  • Standard
A standard DBS check is an in-depth criminal record check conducted on behalf of applicants by employers to ensure that they are qualified for the position. At this level, it displays all of a person's cautions, warnings, and reprimands. It will also reveal any unspent convictions in England and Wales, as well as convictions in Scotland and Northern Ireland, on a person's criminal record.
  • Enhanced
This level, like the standard DBS check, is only available to employers who must request it on behalf of their applicants. An enhanced DBS check includes all of the information found in a standard DBS check. An employer can, however, request an enhanced check to identify if a potential or present employee is on the Children's Barred List or the Adult First List. This assures that a candidate is not prohibited from working with vulnerable groups, but it can only be requested if the applicant or employee will be participating in a regulated activity. The Enhanced DBS Check will be required for most roles in education and health care.
How long does a disclosure and barring certificate last?

A DBS check does not have an official expiration date. Any information submitted will be up to date at the time of the check. You must select when a new check is required. You can verify whether the applicant's certificate is up to date online if they have signed up for the DBS update service.

What does disclosure and barring service mean? The role of disclosure and barring service means that employers make safer recruitment decisions by processing a DBS check on new recruits. The Disclosure and Barring Service then decides whether it’s suitable for the person to be placed on or off a barred list.
