Moving and Handling of People Training Course

The Moving and Handling training course ensures carers learn the correct Moving and Handling techniques to prevent and reduce the risk of injuries to service users or themselves. Especially as Moving and Handling in Health and Social Care is a key part of any working day for most employees.

Individuals who require assistance can be elderly, frail or prone to injuries, and if the wrong handling techniques are used, could suffer dislocated joints, fractured bones, ruptured ligaments and broken skin. Carers similarly risk musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) when moving and handling people. If regular training doesn't occur, it can be costly and difficult to manage – causing time off, inability to carry out roles effectively, emotional distress and in some circumstances legal proceedings.

5. Know your limits

Good Moving and Handling technique is a helpful addition to the steps you should take to reduce the risks but shouldn't be a substitute. They can include:

1. Use the power position
2. Use the correct equipment if required
3. Don't bend your back as you lift
4. Avoid leaning to one side or twisting
5. Keep your head up

Both employers and employees have responsibilities when it comes to moving and handling a patient safely.

Employers' responsibilities include:

- Performing risk assessments regularly.

- Avoiding moving and handling tasks that could result in injury.

- Putting measures in place to reduce risk.

- Assessing risks that cannot be avoided.

- Regular training for staff and providing suitable equipment.

Employee's responsibilities include:

- Following the specified systems of work and using the equipment provided.

- Letting their employer know of any problems, accidents or possible hazards.

- Ensuring their actions don't put themselves or others at risk.

The Care Certificate standard 13.3 requires staff to demonstrate how to move and assist people and objects safely, meaning staff should complete Moving and Handling of people training, but moving and handling training is not part of the care certificate.
